The India China Institute at The New School is seeking an 18 month post-doctoral research fellow for our Sacred Landscapes and Sustainable Futures in the Himalaya Initiative (Sacred Himalaya Initiative).
Supported by a grant from the Henry R. Luce Foundation, the Sacred Himalaya Initiative (SHI) is a multi-year research and teaching initiative that will explore the intersection of sacred landscapes, everyday religion and environmental issues within the Himalaya through field-based inquiry and theoretical analysis. This project builds and expands on a prior three-year project with a similar focus in the Himalaya. The salary is competitive based on experience. Position Responsibilities:
Design and teach two undergraduate courses at either The New School’s Environmental Studies program or in the Religious Studies program at Eugene Lang College. One course would be held in the 2015 Fall semester (Sept. – Dec.) and the second in the 2016 Fall semester (Sept. – Dec.). Spend 7-8 months during the spring and summer of 2016 conducting fieldwork, primarily based in Nepal, with the possibility of time in the Himalayan regions of India and China (TAR). Coordinate and collaborate on fieldwork between the ICI Core Team of scholars and researchers in the field in Nepal, India, and China. Assist ICI Senior Director to coordinate, develop, and manage an international network of scholars for the SHI project. Tasks include, but not limited to: convening conference and workshop sessions, conducting literature reviews, facilitating public discussions and support at international conferences. Help develop, manage, and disseminate research materials for the SHI project, including both interim reports and final grant reporting. Provide support and data generation for the Sacred Landscape Mapper, which is one component of the SHI that will integrate field-based data and GIS mapping with textual analysis. Requirements:
Candidates must have a PhD (received within the last 5 years) preferably in Religious Studies with strong interest in Environmental Studies, Political Ecology or Global Politics. Expertise and language skills in some part of the Himalayan region (e.g., Nepali, Mandarin, Tibetan, Hindi). Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills and experience conducting ethnographic field work, preferably in geographically and culturally diverse communities. Candidates must be able to undertake international travel within India, China (TAR) and Nepal. Open to US citizens and foreign scholars.
