Résumé :
This talk shares insights from the journey to replacing synthetic khatas and lungtas in the Himalaya and beyond with biodegradable ones. The project, “Biodegradable Blessings,” was born out of a collaboration between entrepreneur Ang Dolma Sherpa, religious scholars Amy Holmes-Tagchungdarpa and Kalzang Dorjee Bhutia, and anthropologist Pasang Yangjee Sherpa to address the environmental pollution from overconsumption of mass produced synthetic religious materials meant to bring spiritual merit. The speakers will highlight traditional methods and materials that were used widely to make sustainable khatas and lungtas for generations across the Himalayas. The talk ends with a discussion of mass production and overconsumption of affordable synthetic material.
