This presentation analyses how the state used the reconstruction efforts after the earthquake to reinforce its imagination of the urban fringes as resource frontiers, where the state seized the opportunity to re-territorialize the rural space under the domain of urban space. Urbanization and urban administrative promotion in Yushu City exacerbate the conflict between private property relations and public land usage on the urban fringes by re-mapping the space in the state’s imagination and the
imposition of regulatory compliance, thereby re-territorializing the urban fringe, making state power more visible.
